Black Rock Shooter OVA – Review

Friendship. Something that is craved and needed by everyone. But if that friendship was torn, how far would you go to repair it?
Black Rock Shooter is a nice short story of two girls whose friendship grows from the roots that is high school. Everyday brought them closer together and made the possibility of losing each other unbearable.
Story – Inevitably in a short OVA like BRS, there isn’t much time to create a deep and complex story. So BRS, knowing this, uses a common storyline and throws in something unique, making it utterly fantastic. The way BRS shows the two sides of the storyline side-by-side makes the conclusion all the more effective, and by splitting the anime into two halves and showing them next to each other, BRS presents its story in a way that is not only refreshing, but more intriguing to follow as we try to decipher what is taking place. Although I began to doubt the storyline during the final few minutes, the conclusion brought it all together and cleared my doubts by showing how far someone would be willing to go to save a friend.
Art – Seeing as BRS is an independently made anime, the money in the art department is limited as shown by some sketchy bits of animation. When I first saw the characters, I immediately saw the similarites to others from different anime such as Azusa from K-ON!. But apart from that, the art is very well done, from the characters emotions shown through a variety of expressions, to the battle scenes, which although a little sketchy, were very well done overall. The eyes of the characters caught my attention most as they were very detailed and this combined well with the complex variety of emotions shown throughout.
Although there isn’t a great deal of music in this anime, the pieces used during the battle scenes and the ED song were brilliantly composed, and the silence used during some parts of the anime was more effective then any musical piece could have been.
Once again, with BRS being a short OVA, there isn’t much time to work with the characters. However when the time calls for it, Mato and Yomi both show a degree of development as they strive to keep their friendship intact.
Enjoyment – The timely change from daily life to battle scenes was very enjoyable, and when the conclusion brought the two together it brought a smile to my face when I realized what had happened. When watching BRS, I was originally confused at how the two story lines would connect. Now however, I feel like if I watched it again, I would enjoy it so much more knowing that now I know the bigger picture, I can focus on the events that lead up to it.
Overall this is a great attempt at creating something new and unique. With the short amount of time available, BRS gives us a fantastic story, which although small, is definitely memorable. Personally I really enjoyed this anime as a whole, and like I said, I’d probably enjoy it a lot more if I watched it again. By coming into this anime with few expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to find something as compelling as Black Rock Shooter.
It also posed me an interesting question: How far would you be willing to go for a friend?

Awesome review Fabrice. I really wish they’d make a sequel. I really loved the characters and would like to see more of em. I’m still suffering from BRS withdrawal XD

Really liked the “Black Rock Shooter” OVA. Have seen many avid BRS fans disappointed in this OVA so it seems like it may appeal more to non-fans or those not familiar with BRS. Myself, am unfamiliar with most of the BRS lore so watched with a blank canvas and no expectations whatsoever, and there I feel “Black Rock Shooter” really delivered.
In its short time frame it brings a potent sufficiently spun out story about the girls’ friendship and intertwines the other world well into the normal world events. Whether the other world is an alternate reality, something sci-fi or simply a symbolic rendition of what takes place in the girls’ hearts is left open which I think suits the story best.
Odd that some may link Mato/Black Rock Shooter’s character to Azusa from K-ON! as save the twin tails and hair color they have nothing in common. If linking her to another twin tail character, I’d see her have far more similar traits with Kana from “Minami-Ke”.

I hope there’s a sequel, to be honest I think it needs one. Need to see more of the characters and a bit more action! also some more Black Gold Saw wold be awesome!

Nice review, hum, but personally, I didn’t really enjoy this anime, even if I’m a fanboy of the Huke’s universe, this anime is for me, really too short, and miss a lot of explanations.
In fact, if there will be a next, then this OVA will raise up in my esteem, otherwise he will fall down still more than now.
But, ok, I still like him… Because it’s BRS and mostly : Dead Master <3

For a short anime, it need to be flashy in order to quickly capture our attention and BRS did that quite well

Was I the only person who though that this OVA didn’t make a lick of sense? Why wouldn’t supposed ‘best friends’ just talk it out? Why was she fighting a random person in the beginning? Why was she teleported to a very alternate reality by a cellphone charm? Why was the other friend suddenly a haremette from ‘School Days’ at the end of the OVA?
When it was fast, it was fast and didn’t make sense.
When it was slow, it was slow and wasn’t interesting.
After watching this I forgot what pacing was.
Thanks for letting me rant, I couldn’t bring myself to write a review but I still had contained feelings.

The thing is how can you fit everything in 50mins?
of course you cant and so thats why they had to skip parts making bits unexplained or confusing. im hoping this will lead to a sequel like TV series so that then we can have you bg story.
OVA’s like this cant be masterpiece but BRS turned out to be good in the general picture.
Anyway thanks for sharing ! =D

I was disappointed with the art they used during the school-life scenes. The quality just didn’t compare to that of the fight scenes. It’s like they had two different groups animate the school-life world and the BRS world.

yep, it’s friendship.
In the end, I finally understand the meaning of the fight, the creator of the OVA surely is great, IMO.
for school-life scenes, I like them, they are moving more like humans than many other animes. many frames are used even in one second. You could see the entire scenes are lively.

Hmmm… I should watch this. Hopefully, real soon.

I honestly enjoyed it from start to finish, although was skeptical at the start.
I see most people want more action but really, I enjoyed this series as it is, with the high school and slice of life feel. The action just made it “better” for me.
I loved how it interlaced between BRS world and the current world.
I loved the theme of friendship incorporated into this series, as most people I assume can relate to this. I know I for one can relate to this.

if this was a standalone OVA, it was pretty dull.
However if they actually do make a proper sequel series/ova, then this BRS OVA was a decent start, as it fleshed out the characters a bit, and gave fans some nice albeit disjointed and brief service.

I expected an generic action show,
but after the first minute of the Ova I fell for it(and for Mato)
I was very surprised about the voice actress of Mato, who was the same as Kanade from Angel Beats.
The character design with natural haircolors was so pretty and I really liked the not so perfect art of animation
They handled the parting ways topic very well, the placing of the action scenes was unusual but fullfilled its purpose.
I had liked to get a little more explanation about the other world.
I will defintely watch this Ova again.

Ye Hanezawa did a great job with mato, even thought different from Kanade but she did a similar job with Kobato =)
