Today I went to the city to get my hair cut after nearly 2 months of looking like a caveman, anyway decided to check out a few stores and while browsing the Anime section, I found a big section dedicated to Studio Ghibli, this brought me early memories as Studio Ghibli was the one that introduced me to the world of Anime when I when was in my young glory back in Singapore.
To be precise the first anime was My Neighbor Totoro directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki. I cant remember which specific year it was but it definitely in mid 90′s. One thing I know is that I completely fell in love with the art and only the art as I think I was too young to understand ^^. From then on, other series such as Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (by Toei animation but by Hayao Miyazaki) and so on followed into my watch list.
Isnt it nostalgic? Surprisingly most of them were watched even before the Pokemon Boom. So what about you? Do you remember your first Anime? if so when! And how do you feel when you look at at it?

Fabrice, Eurasian, Student, Traveler, Blogger. I decided to open a blog. I feel I want to write something. This blog is my final haven when everything seems nuisances; urging me to assess and to share my thoughts and my own findings to the world, or at least to my fellow neighbours in the blog sphere.

I don't really want to count the anime I watched at occasionally when I was a kid since I didn't keep up with any of them--they include Sailor Moon and Digimon. When I really began watching anime was as a freshman in college in 2004, first with Spirited Away, then next to Fruits Basket.
Ah Sailor Moon, I found it funny how I came across it way later in the 2000's lol
In the 90's I watched my first animes; Alps no Shoujo Heidi, Chiisana Viking Vickie and Peter Pan no bouken but at that time I didn't know it was from japan or anime
Looking back it were very cool animes, haha but old.
back in 2002 I consciously started to watch anime with NGE, Amaenaide yo!! and Renkin San-kyuu Magical? Pokaan. I wouldn't want to miss any those early shows I've randomly picked, they are still dear to me.
Lol your experience is quite funny. not knowing whether it was anime or from japan XD
Oh amaenaide yo!! I watched in 2006, it was so nice! come to think of it Im sure what was the number of anime I actually watched, too young ^^
Haha, well I was a just little kid back then, it was shown on tv
Oh you know it?
amaenaide yo!! was sooo nice, I liked the second season even more ^^
Oh course I know it but I think i only watched it in 2006, I was liking all the harem anime at that time XD
I so need to watch My Neighbor Totoro. >.<
Anyway, despite having watched random episodes of Doraemon as a little kid, I've always considered Naruto as the first anime I watch and the rest of the Big 3 (is Bleach still even considered as one of them?) soon followed.
You still didnt watch it! D:
yes make it a priority for the weekend or something XD
Well ye depends on generation since Bleach came in 2004 or something.
hmm I stuck to Digimon like glue for a while along with Tenchi Muyo, Rurouni Kenshin and Gundam Wing
Oh big Digimon fan! I use to collect the stickers haha
My first Anime...
I don't know. Maybe Mazinger Z or this old Football Anime in the 90's. With Arabaic Dub.
But back then I didn't know what 'Anime' was. For me it was all the same cartoon.
The first Anime in Germany was probably Pokemon and Ranma 1/2. Maybe something before that too.
I have lot's of first animes. why? mainly because i didn't really get into it until I got cable and AXN (Samurai X/Ruronin Kenshin, Gatekeepers, You're Under Arrest just to name a few from this channel)
But really honestly, my first encounter with anime would have to be from my grandmother OAO. Yes, my Grandmum. When I was smaller and used to visit her home, she would have a tape(VHS) of Gundam F91 played for me. YEa it was in Cantonese, but it didn't matter, I really enjoyed it nonetheless.
As to how she even got it or why....well ^^;; I'll never know
There was a surprising amount of anime shows that were broadcast in regular TV when I was a child. Among those were stuff like Heidi, Candy Candy, Ie Naki Ko Remi, The Secret Garden which I watched merely because they were cartoons and they were interesting.
I think it wasn't until high school that I started to consciously watch anime, when I watched Lain and Evangelion.
Ghibli stuff! Even after all the stuff I watched, Nausicaa still resonates with me the strongest.. =)
As for anime..I was more influenced by Tokusatsu (Ultraman, Kamen Rider) during my formative childhood but I suppose my first real brush with Anime got to be chinese dubbed Gundam W. =D
Nice we are alike
Nausicaa was beautiful but it felt weird that it wasnt part of Ghibli ^^ but Toei still did an amazing job!
Oh yes Kamen Rider! its a shame that it only played a bit part in my introduction of anime.
I've had my first experiences when I was younger and all the stuff that was licensed early was released on German TV. I caught the occasional Pokemon, Digimon and Heidi episode... never had any interest in them, background noise to my life back then. Later I caught GANTZ, Samurai Champloo and The Vision Of Escaflowne (love it) on late night German TV. Those I watched whenever I could.
My real first fansub experience was in 2005. I came across Static-Subs subbing Mai-HiME. It's still my #1 favorite anime of all times and it helped me through tough times in the army. After that I caught up with the shitty German dubs I had watched until then, replaced them with subs and started actively watching fansubs. A little later I discovered MyAnimeList.net and started working with the staff. Since then I've completed more than 700 anime, but I've come to a point where I could stop watching anime any day. I'll keep watching as long as I can but if I had to suddenly stop it would not be a problem.
So you werent part of the pokemon like many of us? interesting.
Must have been something watching shows in German like samurai champloo and then watching it in fansub later ^^ how did you find that change?
Mai-HIME I realised it on your MAL profile, nice to see folks liking earlier series, most tend to change to recent. You wento army?! wow must be voluntary I suppose.
I think by having a big chunk of anime on your watchlist kinda puts you off at some point, I know it did to me, Having so many like 10 series.. I kinda lost the excited I had back when i used to watch a few selected that i thought would be interesting, and thats what i do now because i dont really want to stop watching anime, even if its even 1 series. Its become something very close to me and something I really enjoy. But man hats off for 700! what a big chunk haha
Interesting experience you had with anime
No, not really. I watched a few episodes and spent some minutes playing Pokemon on someone else's Gameboy but that's about it. Samurai Champloo and Escaflowne were actually decent dubs. But of course the original experience was much better.
I know what you mean about the favorites. I haven't changed mine in a while, anime or character favorites. But I do still think of changes once in a while. The last favorite anime I changed was Bakemonogatari, and the newest additions to my character favorites were Denpa Onna's Touwa Erio and Amagami's Nanasaki Ai - to give you a time frame of when I change my favorites, heh.
Yes, if you decide you want to be a pussy and not join the army you can tell the people who evaluate your abilities that you're afraid of guns or have a terrible asthma condition. and then you're home free. But I wanted to get some physical education and see how well I can shoot, and even though I was often frustrated, especially in the first 3 months, it was a good decision and I'd do it again.
Thanks, my friend. I'll continue watching anime as long as I have the time.
Touwa Erio, Yes Me too ive fallen for her haha
Dont get me wrong about the army, I like it that people are still considering doing it, I know that my father and such told me that i was very much a good experience too. But for me unfortunately I have to be against it since I have medical issues that will prevent me from it but if not then yes I wouldnt mind
Good, I just cant imagine you stopping for the time being XD
I can't remember what the first anime I watched back then, as there were quite a few on video tapes as well on TV (along with western cartoons). I do have vague memories of watching things like Kimba the White Lion, Princess Knight, and a Japanese anime film adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Some I don't even know how we manage to have them in the first place!
For me it is fairly easy as my earliest memories are of watching anime itself. It was the original Macross or rather the American adaptation that became Robotech. I specifically remembered the transforming Valkyries and the lovely love triangle that became one of the staples in the franchise.
Mine had to be Speed Racer back in the 70's - yep I am that old (><)
It wasn't until Robotech however that I realized was anime was and have enjoyed it ever since.
My first anime was Dragon Ball, in the early 90's. It was right before Sailormoon hit the airwaves.
My first was Dragon Ball as well, then for a long gap, I didn't watch anything until FMA and Shaman King.
I was a 90s boy. First anime was Dragon Ball. Caught a few episodes of the dub when I was around four or five and soon after I caught the whole Japanese series on the now-defunct International/AZN channel. And then after that, Pokemon rolled along...
I guess Im one of the few that wasnt into the Dragon Ball zone, but pokemon yes! fond memories haha
I watched tons of anime when I was little without knowing what it was... things like Urusei Yatsura, Gundam, and Captain Harlock. But I didn't know it was anime, specifically. I just had a friend that always seemed to have these dvds and I'd peruse through his stash watching random things.
I think the first time I realized that it was anime was later on when I watched Digimon when I was in high school. That's when I really realized that it was from Japan and when I really looked into anything. It was also the first time I specifically searched for the subbed, un-dubbed version. My first anime that I knew was anime after that was Love Hina (and it was also my first manga).
It's interesting to me even now, having an account on 'MAL', that I'm finding things I watched when I was younger here and there as I watch newer things. Like watching Ozma this season, I thought the art looked familiar. And then I realized I had seen Captain Harlock when I was really young. It's cool though, that it ties together. =3
*These VHS's, I should've said. My goodness I must still be tired. =P
MAL in all honesty has really helped me find some titles that I didnt know what is was when I was young, Your right, me too I wasnt certain that it was from Japan. Luckily my grandma told me so then I had a vague idea of Anime ^^
