Who is Holo?

Holo is a fictional character from a popular Japanese light novel series called “Spice and Wolf” written by Isuna Hasekura with illustrations by Ju Ayakura. In the series Holo is a wolf harvest deity originally from a land known as Yoitsu. She is portrait as having a form of a young girl, however she retains her large white-tipped wolf tail, and ears. Her true form is that of a very large wolf. She refers to herself as the “Holo The Wise Wolf” or “Wise Wold of Yoitsu”.

Who are the people behind the Project?

Project Holo was created by three university students (Fabrice Requin, Wibi Udayana and Kelsey Requin) back in September 2011. The group welcomed a fourth member nicknamed “Le Remplacent” later on that month but who’s real identity will remain anonymous.

Why was Holo chosen for the Project?

It was more a choice that was lead from multiple factors as shown in the daigram above. Furthermore Holo fitted in very well with the concept of traveling given that in the story of Spice and Wolf, Holo wanted to travel and see how the world has changed while she has remained in one place for years. We will be Lawrence and show her the world but in 3D (real world).

Why Historical Landmarks?

Basically the idea of Landmarks is in reference to Up in the Air, plus all three of us are history enthusiast, that is why we decided that monuments were a fitting idea, not only its eyecatching it is also educational, not many might know about certain places and landmarks. By adding Holo in the picture, people who recognises Holo will learn about the Landmark that is featured and for those who only knows about the landmark will get to know Holo.

Is the sole purpose of traveling for Project Holo?

No, How it works is that during Our holidays to Bali, Singapore and Japan for example it has been planned for more than a year way before Project Holo was created. When we came up with the project we decided that during each of our stay, we will try and designate or squeeze a day for Project Holo which fit the landmark we wanted to feature.

How did Fabrice acquire the Holo Cardboard?

Through Yahoo Auction Japan.

What is the time frame of doing Project Holo?

You must remember that Project Holo was done while Fabrice and co were on holiday. The first outing was in China back in September 2011 when they had one week study break from University. The next outing was between their long summer break of November to February.

Why is it mostly Fabrice in the pictures?

While deciding, it was like ‘waiting for the moon the fall’. We needed someone who was willing to go that step more and hence Fabrice decided to throw in the hat. He will be the main person with Holo, There are sometimes where Kelsey and Wibi will make an appearance.

How did we travel with Holo?

Unfortunately for those, Holo doesnt have her own seat on the plane, As you may have seen, she comes with a cardboard box. That cardboard box is checked in the plane as an “oversize” baggage meaning she goes to where all our luggage are on the plane. On Land, we travel through a mixture of Trains and Taxi rides, with a lot of walking.

Where did they get the funds?

We all worked part time while studying in order to save up. For example Fabrice works at a fine dining restaurant. It took them more than a year to get the required funds to Travel.

How did they manage to enter certain landmarks?

Some Landmarks are in the open where there aren’t any entrance or need of a ticket, so that was the easiest. As for those that required queuing, tickets etc They just did like everyone else did except we carried a cardboard box.. No one ever questioned or stopped them.

What did the people think? did anyone stop us?

No one stopped us that’s for sure, in fact many just walked by minding there own business, We cant read people’s mind but of course there were some that didn’t seem to like it but not everyone is the same. Everyone is different, with different idea’s and opinions.

Wibi Udayana

The embarrassment of taking the pictures and having people stare at you is one priceless experience I will never forget. There were times when I wanted to give up on her because it was rather annoying to carry such a big piece around, but thankfully we managed to make it back in one piece.

Having to carry a cardboard across Bali’s hot climate, Singapore’s hundreds spectators, Kyoto’s cold&rainy weather and through Tokyo’s bustling trains is one very weird but rewarding experience. I really hope you will enjoy what Holo has to show you.

Kelsey Requin

At first I wasn’t too keen on Project Holo, I thought such a project was too difficult and unrealistic. But after a while I realised that this is a great once in a life time experience that would be extremely memorable for my brother, Wibi and I to have for the many years to come. Through her we shared lots of laughter, jokes, and embarrassing moments, It’s great whenever we reminisce on our project! Of course, there were bad times, when I couldn’t take the pressure, however Project Holo allowed me to have a very close bond with my brother and Wibi.

In the end of the day, when people see us walking with this huge life sized cardboard which is almost my height, I could sense them judge us. My brother sometimes hesitated when taking her out, so Wibi and I would always say encouraging/motivating words such as “who cares, they don’t know what we’re doing, just do this, no one will ever see you again” kind of sentence.

Lastly, if it wasn’t for Holo, I wouldn’t have learnt about anime and be able to remember a lot of the many sight seeings we’ve done. She is now in a weird joking way, become part of the family and I like to annoy my brother by calling Holo his “wife” written by ignorant haters who clearly never bother reading what the project is all about, people just judge by first glance. Anyway I think I wrote to much, I hope you all enjoy Project Holo! this was an amazing experience which I will forever cherish.

Fabrice Requin

What a Journey this has been! Seeing what we had in mind come together little by little is truly incredible, who would have thought! The three of us shouldn’t feel embarrassed, we should feel proud of what we have achieved, sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone in order to enjoy yourself.
I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to do such a thing and especially to do it with Wibi and Kelsey, I couldnt ask for more! A big thank you for all the support weve received so far and hope you enjoy Holo’s adventure!
